        National Sanatorium Nagashima Aiseien

Nagashima the ‘island of human rights’ aiming for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage recognition

Nagashima Aiseien was established in 1930 as the first national leprosy sanatorium in Japan. Patients from across the country were forcibly separated from their families and isolated on this island. Although the island is less than 30 meters from the mainland, many spent the rest of their lives here, stripped of their human rights under a system of "isolation" and "discrimination." Visiting Nagashima is a journey to learn about the history of leprosy, the suffering endured by patients, and their strong will to overcome it.
Today, more than 15,000 people — including students and general visitors — come to the history museum each year to confront the past and reflect on building a future free from prejudice and discrimination.

        Historical site tour

Known as the “Quarantine Pier,” this was the heartbreaking place where patients were forcibly separated from their families and society. In front of the building, their clothing and belongings were subjected to harsh disinfection processes. Patients themselves were forced to undergo a “disinfection bath”, a painful and humiliating ritual. Through these historical sites, visitors gain a deeper understanding of the harsh realities and struggles endured by those isolated here.
